About Malaysia National Petroleum Company

Malaysia National Petroleum (MNP) is an oil and gas company that provide sales of petroleum products. MNP are considered as downstream that involve activities such as marketing of various petroleum products. It markets multiple petroleum products such as kerosene, fuel oil, gasoline, diesel, industrial and marine lubricants fluids and oils, LPG etc.

Other than that, MNP  also offers services such as pre-sales and after-sales services and food solutions. MNP also manage aviation depots, bulk depots as well as bottling plants.  The headquarters of MNP is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but have branch offices across Malaysia.

Challenge

MNP embarked on a journey to improve customer experience and to increase market penetration which consequently contributes to an increase volume of data from different application systems.

However, MNP faces challenges to ensure accurate decision making in timely manner due to its huge transactional volume of data and scattered data points. They are unable to respond to business challenges with speed. Therefore, MNP are looking for cloud technology that can cater the ability to handle big data at a centralized repository.

Why AWS

AWS was chosen due to its mature and stable nature. As MNP contains confidential data, therefore security is important which is provided by AWS with its encryption features and access management policy. MNP requires for data to be ingested in a speed manner in order to make real time decision making and insights and AWS provide such ability to have a reliable and fast accessibility. Onprem technology are no longer valid for big data, therefore, cloud technology like AWS met the MNP requirement in terms of the scalability and its infrastructure.

Talend was chosen as an ETL tool to perform ETL activities. Since Strateq is also a business partner with Talend, thus, making it more effective to choose Strateq as the middle person between client and business partner.

Results and Benefits

Strateq have successfully adopt cloud technology and create a centralized repository of data for MNP within the project timeline. There are more than 20 modules which have successfully deployed to production smoothly throughout the years. The single source of truth in the cloud landing zones have allow business to access data more easily as well as provide capability to implement advanced analytics to assist in marketing as well as to assess business health performance. Furthermore, this has made data visibility more apparent as well as increase the capability for reporting purposes. Other than that, risk is well contained due to the policy enforcement.

Next Steps

Strateq will act as maintenance support team for the production jobs and always looking for ways to improve the jobs. Since more and more data are ingested, therefore, Strateq will looking for ways to upgrade any related technology to cater the MNP requirements. Strateq and MNP will continue working together for more enhancement project in the coming years.
